Although the idea of the Marshalls Energy Company adding Ebeyes KAJUR power company to its family has been talked about for a number of years, there is a renewed push among RMI leaders to have MEC run KAJUR. It makes more sense for MEC to run KAJUR now, Chief Secretary Bobby Muller told the Journal. He explained that there are several options, including having KAJUR operate independently with its own board of directors. There currently is no KAJUR board, and its status has remained unclear since it is not an incorporated entity, and at one time came under the umbrella of the Kwajalein Atoll Development Authority an agency that was put into receivership by the RMI government last year and no longer exists. A new KADA is attempting to form, but since legislation was passed last year, the RMI government and Kwajalein leaders have been at odds on board appointments, so no board has yet been named. MEC general manager Billy Roberts, who went to Kwajalein last week with Public Works Minister Matt Zackhras and a team of high-level RMI officials, will be returning to Ebeye with Zackhras on Thursday this week to spend a day at KAJUR for plant inspections and meetings with KAJUR staff. Billy and I are scheduled to visit this week to review the status of the power utility and see how MEC can help, Zackhras told the Journal. The two companies are expected to merge soon enough so its appropriate to have both management teams meet at this point to discuss the future for KAJUR. Zackhras is also chairman of the MEC board. Putting KAJUR under MEC would have it function as part of a larger utility, Muller said. This would be more cost effective, he added. For example, KAJUR doesnt have an electrical engineer, he said. But MEC has one. MEC could troubleshoot specialist needs for KAJUR. Majuro Water and Sewer Company comes under MEC, as do the outer island power operations on Jaluit and Wotje.
